Challenge
An oil refinery located in Canada was experiencing a major dilemma and facing a potential full boiler shut down because a variety of flue gas leaks on both of the two boilers used in their refining process. Due to the threat of losing both operational boilers that would have resulted in large production loss, shutting down the units was not a feasible option. Radiant heat from boiler skin combined with confined space, noxious gas and location of leaks kept onsite maintenance crews from gaining access to complete repairs.
Technical Assessment
Phoenix High Temperature Repair crews were mobilized to the plant and immediately established control of the work area. Multi-gas (LEL, O2) and heat monitors were utilized. Proprietary PPE was required of all Phoenix crew members during work site inspections. Location and inspection of leaks, complete with risk assessment, confined space plan and repair was planned with client management.
Solution: Online CO Boiler Repair
Phoenix crews have extensive online boiler repair experience and spent several months onsite building scaffolding to gain access to leak locations on the boiler. We successfully repaired all leaks with approved welding procedures in confined space and immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH) environments.
Results
This work scope was a success, and the client was able to continue production without any interruptions to CO boiler units or refining processes. The savings to the refinery were in the tens of millions of dollars.
