How Phoenix Prevented Service Interruptions with Boiler Wind Box Repair

Challenge

A power generation station located in the northern Midwest was experiencing a major failure in their boiler wind box. This created issues with the boilers balance of air flow for efficient combustion in the boiler. Due to the boiler’s inefficient production levels and turnaround date was not till many months in the future shutting down the boiler was not an option. Radiant heat from boiler skin combined with scope, and elevation kept onsite contractor and maintenance crews from starting work to complete repairs.

Technical Assessment

Our team has a successful history of safely gaining access by building scaffolding and repairing online boilers and wind boxes. Because of this, Phoenix High Temperature Repair was contacted by plant management and maintenance contractor for an immediate site consultation and initial planning for a repair was initiated.

Solution

The Phoenix team built and then installed scaffolding in the high temperature environment. Our team removed the insulation to gain access to affected areas by the repair and installed the approved repair. Once a repair was installed, our team completed restoration activities such as reinstalling the insulation, casing and cladding then scaffold tear down.

Results

This work scope was a success and the client was able to continue power generation without any interruptions and kept the boiler from going into a costly unplanned shut down. Because of Phoenix’s intervention, the client was able to maintain their original turnaround date previously planned by plant management.
